Olden in Norway

I love books!  So no surprise that I loved this quilt at the Birmingham Quilt Festival by Yemina Levan called "My Parents Library".

This was in the Novice Quilt category!  Wow!

The nice thing about cruising is that you go to bed each night and wake up in the morning somewhere else, with new territory to explore!

Our second stop in Norway was the port of Olden in the Nordfjord.  At 66 miles the Nordfjord is the sixth longest fjord in Norway and encompasses the Jostedalsbreen, mainland Europe's largest glacier.

The population of Olden is 498!  So with two big cruise ships in port that day, we increased their population by about 6000 people.  We used these small tender boats to get to shore.


We took a drive up to Loen, a small village located in the inner part of the Nordfjord about four miles north of Olden.  It is the home to some of the oldest farms in Norway, pre-dating Christianity.

We were able to see two glaciers - the Briksdal Glacier and the Kjenndalen Glacier.  The Kjenndalen Glacier is unique because of its intense blue-green color.  Lake Lovatn, pictured above boasts miles of turquoise waters, which have been colored by clays washed down from the Kjenndalen Glacier.  Twice in the last century, avalanches triggered tsunami-like waves on the lake.  The glaciers hold water frozen millions of years ago.

We met this couple Dave and Shari from California that we ate dinner with every night (they were at our table with another couple from Italy).  We ended up on a lot of the same shore excursions and just had a really fun time with them.  Great people!
