Books and Pickleball

My friend's daughter asked me if I had some fabric scraps of certain colors a few months ago because she wanted to make a bookshelf quilt for her Mom (my friend) who is an avid reader.  Look how great it turned out! I'm so impressed!  She said she is not a quilter so she didn't make a quilt, she "crafted a blanket". πŸ˜‚. Looks like a fabulous quilt to me!! πŸ‘❤️

Oh my gosh - should I make a pickleball quilt?  It's so tempting!!

Top Ten

A couple of years ago I finally started keeping track of the books I read each year.  I made a spreadsheet and I include the book title, author, a short description and then give the book a 1-5 star rating, 5 stars mean I really loved the book or at least liked it a LOT. *****

This year I read 78 books!  My daughter asked me to pick my top ten for the year.  I actually had given 20 of the books I read five stars but from those 20 I narrowed it down to these ten.

If you love to read like me, and have a great suggestion for my 2025 list please put it in the comments.  I love getting good book recommendations!

Happy Reading in 2025!! 😊

Weekend Fun

Fun Girls Night Out with my daughters and oldest granddaughter!  Thanks to Michelle we went to The Wick Lab and made candles.  We got to pick our scents (mix whatever scents we wanted - mine is Pear Blossom/Almond), pick our container, center the wick and pour the candle.  We had a great time!  We also ate YUMMY Indian food at the Bombay House. πŸ˜‹

Got to see my Dad this weekend too!  We went out to eat at Billy Blanco's - also delicious!

Yesterday, on the way home, I went to the School House at the Corn Wagon Quilt Shop for my Stitch Sampler Book class.  Had a blast and learned a lot!πŸ‘

And.... do you just love my new Brooks shoes or what?? ❤️

Art Quilter in the Making

My six year old granddaughter has discovered the love of sewing and can use the sewing machine very well!  She got on a real sewing kick right before school started.  My daughter told me that she quickly decided she didn't need to pin, and she didn't like putting right sides together because it made the seams "too bulky".  She prefers just to layer the fabric one over the top and sew them that way.  My daughter told her she was just trying to teach her the "correct" way to do it.  Granddaughter's answer, "There is no correct way, there is only the way other people do it." OK!  My daughter and I are both pattern/rule followers, so this will be fun!  She'll probably help us bust out of our box too!

It took some minor toe surgery to get me to slow down enough to post on my blog.  It's been a busy few weeks.  I really want to get more consistent though!  In upcoming posts, look for pictures of quilts I saw at the quilt festival in SLC!

Loved the sign at our local bookstore downtown!

And, yes it's peach season - eating them EVERY day, as many as I can!  And tomatoes... πŸ˜‹

Checking out Little Free Libraries in Park City ... in the Winter...

It's been awhile since I've blogged!  Ever since my husband and I put a Little Free Library in our yard last May, my daughter and I (mostly my daughter) have become slightly obsessed with checking out Little Free Libraries near us and when we travel to other towns and cities.  She has been wanting to check out libraries in Park City, so while visiting my Dad this past week, we set out to check out a few of the many in the area.  It was a rather crazy adventure, because well, it's winter in Park City!

I spotted the one in the first photo and we were puzzled why it wasn't on the map.  As I got closer I wondered why there were no books in it, only a couple of cans of beans!?  Then I noticed the sign: Little Free Pantry .... I had never heard of these before!  You can read more about them here:

Their tag line is "take what you need, give what you can."

There is a Little Free Library app now, that makes finding libraries in the area you're in much easier.  So if you are traveling and in need of a new read, you can stop by a Little Free Library and swap the book you finished for a fresh start! I even spotted one at the airport in Houston!

Go here to find the app:  https://littlefreelibrary.org/app/

We checked out this library.  It is on the map, and a bit of a challenge to get to with all of the icy snow, but we persevered!

This one was even more of a challenge!  It had a LOT of great books in it though, sadly, also some spiders 😲😬.  I'm not a fan of spiders....πŸ•·πŸ•Έ

The library above was more kid oriented and the one below, we didn't venture through the snow to get to.  We did decide to revisit some of these libraries and check out some more in the Park City area, in the Spring though .... after the snow melts....

Here is a picture of the books in our #cherryhill_bookbarn.  Come by and take a look!  You can follow the barn on Instagram for updates.

I will be sharing some more pictures this week from the Houston Quilt Festival - keep an eye out!

It's Getting Close!!

It's getting close to the time our second grandchild will be born!  He is due this month! Over the weekend we had a family baby shower for my daughter, which was really a lot of fun.  She got a lot of cute things - this baby will be well dressed! 😊❤️

My friend Pam does machine embroidery and made these adorable onesies and bib.  She does amazing work - I'm SO impressed!!

This dinosaur quilt is what I've been working on the past few months.  I didn't want to share too many pictures of it until after the shower.  It is a pattern called Dinosaurs by Elizabeth Hartman, and it went together so slick. That lady knows her math - and how to write a pattern!

One of my daughter's nieces made these adorable sugar cookies.  They tasted as good as they look!!

Fun Times!!  Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July weekend!! πŸ˜ŠπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Birthday Scarf

I was out of town last week visiting family 😊

My oldest daughter had a birthday at the beginning of this month and I knitted her this scarf.  It's Party of Five yarn and a free pattern from Ravelry.com.  I really like the Party of Five yarn - it's so soft and the five skeins blend from one color to the next to give it this nice ombrΓ© effect.

Well, according to the code below, I have things that fit into every category!  But... TIH!! 😁

The All-Together Quilt

After reading The All-Together Quilt, by Lizzy Rockwell, with my granddaughter, we decided to make a quilt together, with my daughter Megan (her Mom) for her new baby brother, who is coming this summer!

We decided to use the Disappearing Nine Patch pattern.  (Megan said she liked how it looks complicated but was really easy, and quick to make.  It took the three of us just one afternoon to piece the quilt top.) I cut a bunch of squares and my granddaughter arranged them in nine-patch blocks.  She then decided, on her own, to write the numbers 1-9 so the "Sewist" (Megan) would remember what order they go in.

Here is she labeling the squares in the right order.  I'm impressed!

Mom Megan sewing all the squares together!

The pattern then had us cut the big nine-patch blocks in half in both directions.  Granddaughter did NOT like this part and at this point wanted to change the pattern.  Some of us quilters are pattern/rule followers and some of us like to change things up and really can't stand to follow a pattern exactly.  It appeared that Grandma and Mom are of the first variety of quilters and Granddaughter is going to be of the second variety πŸ˜‚.  But, unfortunately for her, this time, it was 2 - 1 and the blocks were cut!  After Mom Megan arranged them on the design board, Granddaughter decided she really liked it after all! πŸ˜…

Megan sewed the blocks together, I handled the pressing, a border was added and VOILÁ, a beautiful quilt was made because we all worked together! ❤️

The quilt is pinned and ready to be quilted by me (Grandma)!  Brother is going to love it!  It has a lovely soft Homespun on the back! I think we need to make some more All-Together quilts! 😊❤️
