Melissa Sobotka

The second guest on our Quilt Show taping day was Melissa Sobotka.  As you can see, she is an amazing quilt artist!  She works from a photo generally and she shared her technique for that, and her technique for adding details and shading with paint and pencils.  She said, "If you think it's impossible, that's a reason to try it!"

She is famous for her "Chihuly's Gondola" quilt (above left) which won Best of Show in Houston, and her "Silk Road Sampler" quilt (left) which has won numerous awards as well.

You can find out more about Melissa and her work at:

The quilt above is called "End of the Spin."

I got to get up close to to this quilt which has a lot of fun fairies on it.  I tried to get some good pictures of them.  This quilt has so much detail!

This quilt is called "Ode to Inspiration"

You can see in these photos, that if the cameras were in the audience's viewing way, we could watch what was going on on the large screens on both sides of the set.

This is the project Melissa worked on during her demo.  This is what is looked like after she added some shading with textile paint.

Pretty awesome!!
