Our third stop in Norway was Geirangerfjord and port. We actually made a quick stop in Hellesylt to drop some people off who were taking a land tour, then headed into the Geirangerfjord which they say is Norway's most popular and perhaps best-known. There are a LOT of really pretty waterfalls in this fjord.
The town of Geiranger has a population of about 250 people so once again, with two cruise ships in port that day, we increased their population by about 6000. The cruise director that night said, "How would you like to look out your window in the evening and say - oh, the biggest building in town is leaving!"
We had to choose between a couple of activities in port that day - either kayaking or bicycling (well, we narrowed it down to those two :) After seeing the kayakers I almost wished we had done that, but we chose bicycling which was spectacular!
After being outfitted with helmets, gloves and a yellow safety vest, we were driven by bus up the side of the mountain - to quote the guide "22 hairpin turns" up the side of the mountain, on a narrow road that was shared with cars, cyclists, pedestrians, etc. The bus ride was actually slightly terrifying. My husband said it wasn't, but he wasn't sitting by the window either!
We were dropped off at the top by this lake, where we picked up a bicycle.
The picture below is a view from up top - you can't even see the fjord anymore, so you know we were a ways up there!
The ride down was fantastic though - beautiful views! We stopped along the way to take pictures - it was a fun, beautiful day. No waffle stop on this excursion - just lots of beautiful scenery!
No shopping this day either but I was learning about the currency - the Krone. Something might cost 240 Krone and I had NO idea how much that was. Finally one of the store clerks told me to divide by 8 and that would give me the cost in US dollars approximately. That helped a lot!
Nearing the end of my vacation photos, so I won't bore you too much longer :). Today I taught the Summer Blooms Bag at Hi Fashion (1st class of three) - I had a great time! I hope those taking the class did too!
