The Magic of Wales

Last weekend I took a zoom class from Quiltfolk called The Magic of Wales Adventure Workshop.  I really enjoyed it and learned a lot.  The two workshop hosts, Jenni Smith and Kay Walsh are from England and they researched and visited Wales, shared videos and interviews, taught about the history of quilting in Wales and then taught a little workshop on a Welsh inspired quilt.

In the photo above, I learned how to make 16 half square triangles at a time.

Traditional Welsh quilts don't have a binding, Jenni showed us how to turn the edge of the quilt under and hand quilt out to the edge!  I may give this a try.

I had this book in my stash from when my friend Sharon introduced me to Welsh quilting several years ago.  I think I'm going to give hand quilting a try with some designs from this book on the quilt I made in the workshop (below).  This design by Jenni and Kay was inspired by Welsh quilts they saw while filming.  Many of the traditional Welsh quilts were either whole cloth, or "frame quilts" in the style of the one below.

If you're interested in joining the next adventure workshop, in France, check out the link below:
